For something a bit different, over the weekend I got my kids to cook some biscuits that reindeer and boomers will like – we will make them again on Christmas Eve but we HAD to test them first of course!
Make your favourite biscuit dough
roll out the dough then cut into carrot shapes (I found a carrot cutter in a local homewares store but you could do it by hand…)
put carrots onto greased trays and into the fridge
after about 20 minutes, put tray in oven to cook (15 minutes at 180 is usually enough but check your recipe)
cool then remove from tray
make some green icing and cover the carrot tops
make some orange icing and put into an icing pipe (or a ziplock bag and cut the corner off)
zigzag the orange icing over the carrots
let the icing set then store in an airtight container (if they last that long – my kids have never eaten carrots so willingly!!!)
For icing I mixed 1/2 cup icing sugar with 2 teaspoons of water and 2 – 3 drops of food colour. Add a little more water if needed but make sure it is thick rather than runny.
What a cute idea, Cassie – thanks for sharing it! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a carrot shaped cutter but I’ll look out for one now!
That sounds very creative, Cassie. Also sounds like something you could get the kids in on. My kids love to help me out in the kitchen, and this would be a very family-friendly kitchen activity. I also like that this is something a bit different for Christmas. It’s always good to put a new spin on things.
It is fun to do something different, isn’t it Anna?
However, I did see carrot shaped chocolates for sale this Easter so maybe they took a creative version of your idea, Cassie!
These sound so good I wouldn’t be able to save any for the reindeer!
Hehehehe – let us know if you try them, SantaLover 🙂
What a cute idea to leave out for Santa. When Santa use to come to my kids we just left him cookie’s. But you know even Santa keeps to healthy eating. What a cute idea. I enjoy your site.
Cookies are the traditional snack for Santa in the USA I think?
In Australia there seems to be more variation – probably nice for Santa to have variety! We try to make healthier options of snacks (like using wholemeal flour) but we figure Santa probably burns a LOT of energy on Christmas Eve so he can afford some sweets 🙂
Glad to hear you’re enjoying our site, ssamcd – I hope you keep coming back and sharing your memories and ideas with us.
Thanks for letting everyone in on your cool recipe. My sis is an avid ‘biscuit-baker’ and should be put to use so we can have these some time.
Good to hear your sister will be put to use, Magic Pixel! Let us know how your reindeer treats turn out.
What a great and creative recipe. Cookies are a favorite of Santa here in the US. I will have to give them a try. Sometimes we make snowballs for Santa instead of cookies. Just simply homemade marshmallow rolled in coconut. A bit messy, but very good.
Yum snowballs! They were my absolute favourite treat as a kid. Never understood the name (I’m no expert but I thought balls made of snow were white not brown!) but that never stoped me eating them whenever I could get them!
Oh that is adorable!!! Why have I never thought of this? I will definitely be looking into this for this years cookie plate! The boys will think it is so much fun to make carrot cookies to go along with the reindeer food we make(usually a little baggie with odds and ends of oatmeal, raisins, colored cocunut, puff wheat and whatever I can find. A bit of glitter too so it makes it magical!) Thanks for the inspiration, so simple but a ton of fun!
It is a fun idea Cassie shared, isn’t it? So simple and pretty easy but much more interesting than plain biscuits! Hope you and your boys enjoy making them, benjaminsmom.
