Miscellaneous Santas amongst tree decorations
When you decorate your house and Christmas tree each year, does Santa feature very much?
On the tree, the front door or throughout the house, Santa can be part of your decorations.
So do you choose to have him in large doses or just go for traditional Christmas images?
I probably go overboard with the decorations every year. Lots of lights inside and out with garland bows and wreaths but as far as Santa, I’ve only got two decorations. One is a stuffed Santa out of his suit napping on the back of a polar bear. The other is a battery powered Santa that climbs up and down a ladder when you turn it on.

Yes! Santa is a very important presence. We call him “Father Christmas” and all his images are rather rotund and jolly. He epitomises the spirit of giving and we talk about that with the children. In return he gets a mince pie and a glass of milk, plus a carrot to share among the reindeer.

Father Christmas, Santa Claus or St Nick – many names but stil a very special person who symbolises love and giving to me, too, Fren.
I absolutely have Santa ornaments and decorations as a prominent part of our holiday decor. My Santas tend to be the old-fashioned vintage looking St. Nicks. I prefer that Father Christmas look to today’s modern fire engine red fleece that ornaments often have.
Some of those vintage Santas are just beautiful, although I admit we mostly have modern ones in our decorations (mostly been given to me so it hasn’t been a conscous choice).
Loving that Santa is prominent in your decorations though, hohoho!
When Christmas comes in my home there are a lot of decorations including Santa decoration. The Santa decorations are however not really prominent, as we usually just have maybe thre Santa images or decorations. I think too much maybe overdoing it.
I guess it depends on whether you think Santa is a major feature of Christmas or colour and glitter, etc should be just as prominent 🙂
I started to say that the only Santa decorations we have are ornaments on the tree, but then I remembered that I got all my mother’s decorations and she had a ton of Santa decorations. I like more simple decorations, but she always went for big displays all through the house. Or at least that was her goal. lol Last December, I was having a baby — she was born on Dec. 6th. I barely got the tree and stockings up. Hopefully this year, I will be able to decorate the whole house.
Just remember to put the decorations up high enough that little one year can’t reach them, ChristiQ 🙂 My now two year old was grabbing at everything she could see at her first Christmases, despite them being well out of her reach!
Are you going to mix your simple decorations with your Mother’s collection?
I hadn’t even thought of that! There’s 8 years between my first daughter and my baby daughter. (Yeah, hubby and I were crazy. We thought we would have just one more baby to complete our family.) It has been so long since we’ve had little ones around for Christmas. I will have to remember that when we’re decorating. She won’t know what to think about it all! My 9-year-old daughter and I were at the store today and were looking at Christmas stockings. (I think we’re getting new ones for everyone this year, because we’re going to be doing “Secret Santa Stockings”.) We are already getting excited about Christmas and it’s just NOW October!
Yes, we’ll mix our decorations and hers. The kids love her decorations, like the Santa in the rocking chair and the porcelain Santa that lights up.
I could see most kids loving a rocking Santa and a lit up Santa, Christi 🙂
8 years between eldest and youngest sounds reasonable to me – my eldest was 12 when her sister was born 🙂 Enjoy having a little one again at CHristmas – perhaps not the first year, but the next couple of years are so exciting to watch !
I love decorating for christmas, and I go crazy with some many different things to choose from for decoration!! I am like a child in a candy store, I really love shopping for christmas and decorating the house for christmas,I always get santa decorations every year but I also put up decorations to remember the reason for the season, I love it all, My favorite time of year!!

I love decorating with santa and all kinds of decorations but i like to have santa on y door and on my tree.

Our family has a very old set of Russian doll Santas that sits on the fireplace. We also put a Santa sign in the window saying ‘don’t forget to stop here’!
The Russian Santa dolls sounds beautiful, Natasha – especially as I’m assuming they have a family history attached to them.
I have Santa all over my house. I seem to have a lot of Santa and a lot of snowmen. I decorate every room and outside.
You must be busy at decorating time, mandy, but it’s great to feel the Christmas magic no matter which room you are in 🙂
My family loves Christmas. We do not have an abundance of Santa decorations. We have about 8 Santa ornaments on our tree each year. We make a Santa Christmas count down each year, unlike most, we start the count down on Thanksgiving Day. Santa is huge in my house.

SO you add a couple of weeks to your Christmas countdown by starting at Thanksgiving (I’m never quite sure when that is I’m afraid)? DO you use a home-made advent calendar or something to count off the days?
I don’t think we have very many Santas in my house, although I’m sure there’s some I’m not thinking of. My mother buys most of the Christmas decorations, and she usually gets snowmen, holiday candles, cat/dog/other animal related things instead of Santa. I do love Santa, but I think my house is more generally holiday-themed. 😀

I think it’s interesting how we can love Santa yet not necessarily have a lot of Santa objects around the house. For me, I don’t think I need to have him everywhere – the stockings are representative of Santa – and because I think many of the Santa decorations I see are over the top or would look tacky to have heaps of.
Santa’s Elf
For our Christmas calendar we always use a home made calendar. Thanksgiving is in November. My son will also make his own Santa Calendar.
A home made calendar is a great effort, Lisa – I love the idea but admit I just don’t seem to find the time year after year.
Our family collects Christmas books and we have a book on the history of Santa and St. Nicholas. I really treasure that book.
Before my Mum passed away, she allowed each of her 5 children pick out our favorite Christmas tree ornaments. One of my favorites is a Santa that she made out of a plastic ring and yarn. It’s a simple craft but has very precious memories.
Did your Mum make that Santa decoration Clauzetta? I think Christmas trees should hold decorations that are not just beautifully bright and sparkly but also beautiful in our hearts like your Mum’s Santa.
The history of Santa and St Nick must be a heart-warming book – I hope you get to read and share it rather than keeping it on a shelf as a collectible.
I was given it much thought about how I decorate my home for Christmas. Truth be told I thing we stick with more traditional type decorations. That’s not to say Santa isn’t a part of these decorations, because he is featured, but so are other elements of the holiday season.

A traditional theme can be quiet beautiful, and you can more traditional Santa decorations, too.
Surprisingly, Santa doesn’t figure prominently in our holiday decorations. Rudolph seems to be a favorite with my crew. I don’t think it’s intentional (I certainly didn’t put any effort into it), but we can’t deny that he’s pretty popular in our house.
Rudolph is pretty special, too Gary. I think kids relate to him because ‘they wouldn’t let him play’ but later realised the value of him being different and loved him for it – a great Christmas message in itself I think.
I don’t think we have much at all in the way of Rudolhp decorations – like you, things ahve eveloved rather than been planned, but I may have to get us a Rudolph this year 🙂
We have a lot of Christmas decoration and we put them in visible place in the second week of December. My children love drawing pictures with Santa and preparing other Santa ornaments.

Santa is most definitely a huge presence in our home, around Christmas. You see, we start putting out our decorations the week after Thanksgiving and, on average, we have about seven different Santas around the house! The second most featured are reindeer, though; that’s not just Rudolph, either, but the entire crew!
Seven Santas around the house sounds like a lot of fun, Lex 🙂 And I’m glad the other reindeer get a spot – Rudolph doens’t pull the sleigh alone!
