It isn’t always easy buying books for kids, especially if you don’t have kids in that age group yourself. Reading the cover of a book doesn’t always give a good indication of the appropriate age group – and I know I don’t always have time to read a book before I let my kids read it let alone for every kids I buy gifts for at Christmas.
I was very impressed by a Dymocks catalogue not long ago as they did list the age for books aimed at kids.
For anybody else after age appropriate ideas, I found an Australian site listing some good books at a couple of ages – and asking for more people to add to their list so it may be bigger by now with luck.
Books are such a great gift but only if it meets the requirements of the reader. Do you give many books as gifts?
I think books are great gifts – even in this age of eReader technology. As kids we always had one book each from our parents tucked under our Christmas stockings on the ends of our beds.
When giving a book to a child it is really important to make sure that there is an adult who will share the book with them, even for with children who can read.
Sharing books is a lovely thing to do, isn’t it, Fren? My daughters are old enough to read alone but we sometimes still read to them and I often read their books so we can can disucss them – we have even ‘faught’ over who reads a new book in a series first 🙂
My girls always got books for Christmas. As they got older, I picked books according to their taste. I think this reinforced their love for reading without making them read and learning to dread it. We adults love a good book also, so I’ll take the liberty to express my favorit CHRISTMAS book. Christmas Shies. It such a lovely story. I fell in love with the story long before it was a book. I stumbled upon it as a short story in a woman’s magazine .
I could see books being even more appreciated for a white Christmas – curling up inside on a cold day with a good book is lovely.
I haven’t heard of Christmas Shies but am adding it to my list of books to read (it is a VERY long list, lol!)
Hey, great share…..
These are some really great books for kids. Sharing books with your kids is really good. Many parents and children report feeling closer to one another after sharing books together.
Thanks for sharing this post. Keep sharing more….
Cheers!! 🙂
Thanks Judy. I love books and sharing books with kids – we are now doing Christmas book reviews to help people find some good Christmas reads (as much as I’d love to run a site of all sorts of book reviews, I don’t know where I’d find the time!)
