Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's is a brilliant glimmer of the excitement of 40's New York. Holly Golightly - brashly beautiful with a slim black dress, a mysterious past and dark glasses over varicoloured eyes - entrances all the men she meets, including the young writer living above her, though her recklessness may yet catch up with her. Also containing three short stories, this edition shows the elegance and warmth of Capote's writing at its most flawless.

About the Author

Truman Capote was born in New Orleans in 1924 and was raised in various parts of the south, his family spending winters in New Orleans and summers in Alabama and New Georgia. By the age of fourteen he had already started writing short stories, some of which were published. He left school when he was fifteen and subsequently worked for the New Yorker which provided his first - and last - regular job. Following his spell with the New Yorker, Capote spent two years on a Louisiana farm where he wrote Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948). He lived, at one time or another, in Greece, Italy, Africa and the West Indies, and travelled in Russia and the Orient. He is the author of many highly praised books, including A Tree of Night and Other Stories (1949), The Grass Harp (1951), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958), In Cold Blood (1965), which immediately became the centre of a storm of controversy on its publication, Music for Chameleons (1980) and Answered Prayers (1986), all of which are published by Penguin. Truman Capote died in August 1984.

The story of Holly Golightly is a classic – and yet even though I’ve been a fan of the movie for a long time, it was only recently I read the novella. What an eye-opener! I wasn’t sure whether to be disappointed by the liberties Hollywood had taken with the story, or accept that they needed to make it ‘appropriate’ and ‘acceptable’ to a mainstream 1960s audience. Regardless of your stance on this, Capote’s work is definitely worth reading. He portrays his main character in a somewhat unsympathetic light, and yet despite her faults, her naiveté and good intentions are rather endearing. It ends quite differently from the movie, and the whole feel of the work is much more edgy than romantic. This Penguin edition also includes some thought-provoking short stories.

Have you ever heard of a rather famous, historically important novel, and then once you have read it, wondered just why? This is what Breakfast at Tiffany's is like. I had imagined something much longer, with a more forceful plot, but Truman's novella was much of the opposite. Having never seen the film (yes, bad female), I can't comment on similarities or differences, but I did enjoy the lack of romantic sublot in the text. Holly's winding life struck me as rather odd, but I suppose that is some of her charm, and what draws the narrator to her. Despite most of the characters in the text being there for only a brief moment overall, they are all rather well developed, and bring the story full circle. I'm still a bit confused of Holly's 'marriage' to Doc, however, and if it was legal or not. I am rather surprised that this short piece of work, where nothing ever truly happens, has been turned into a successful film, an unsuccessful musical, and a stage play. The other three short stories in the book (House of Flowers, A Diamond Guitar, and A Christmas Memory) were all rather dull in comparison. House of Flowers had its moments, A Diamond Guitar did okay, but A Christmas Memory was a poor finish to an otherwise good piece of work. Capote seems to thrive in writing stories in which nothing worthy of mention happens.
